The work of political lobbyists is an extremely controversial one. Many people feel that they provide an essence of fair game and allow companies, business and charities to be fairly represented within politics. However many people feel that they represent the dark side to politics and allow companies with large budgets to control politics. Lobbying is something that has had a major influence on politics for many years and whether you agree with it or not it is likely to carry on influencing politics for many years to come.

Today Julia Gillard at the last minute did a deal with Senators Xenaphon and Fielding that ensured the Government’s IR Bill was passed, and that the Libs and Nats were snookered by their own politics. The deal was to make the definition of small business, businesses with 15 full time equivalent staff rather than a head count of 15. The number 15 was the important point though for the ALP.

Leaders work with peers, report to bosses and lead teams as part of their daily work routine. This network of inter dependent relationships, sources of power as a result of organization structure and authority frameworks, personality types, organization values and performance expectations often combine to create organizational politics, which if not managed will result in performance inhibiting work environments and demotivated people.

The relationship between the Christian faith and politics is not an easy topic for discussion, especially if we take our starting point from the Christian Scriptures the New Testament. Whereas both the other ‘religions of the book’ (Judaism and Islam) saw their sacred texts emerge in contexts where the faithful were in positions of political authority, the New Testament was written at a time when the church was a persecuted minority with no political power.

The politics that exists in different organizations emanates as a result of the following questions; what is in it for me? And most importantly what is in it for them? When staffs engage in politics in their respective organizations, they are moved by these separate questions of what is in it for me and what is in it for them? As a corollary to this, coming up with answers to the question above leads one to play organizational politics very well.
